Alternatively, perhaps that means the other universe does, eventually, decay from the remaining damage before they could develop, meaning it doesn't have a sustainable future for them. I believe the Observers only invaded this universe because this is the universe which evolved to create them in the future of this universe. So in order for them to have an origin environment that suits their particular and specific needs, they would need to invade the universe, which eventually spawns themselves.

So since it was happening in their own universe, I highly doubt it was the alternate that the Observers were from. These are just guesses of course! Sign up to join this community. The one problem with this is that in an episode in season 3 or 4 forget which one , when Peter is taking a tour around September's brain, he says the Observers "exist outside of time" and are not affected by past events. It's still possible they're from the alternate universe and they're nostalgic or something, but they wouldn't erase themselves.

It's been a while since I saw it so I could be wrong, but if it's true that they exist outside time and they aren't affected by timeline changes then doesn't that invalidate the entire ending? It seems like a pretty big plot hole but it wouldn't surprise me most shows have plot holes when they deal with time travel. Its also possible that, to extrapolate from your own theory, the Observers are from a third alternative universe and consider the alt-universe too damaged after the effects of the destabilisation following Walters crossing over, and instead chose to invade the prime universe due to it being relatively untouched by the events of Walters crossing.

Their world had basically become a dystopian ruin, as it was destroyed by pollution and other disasters. The Observers were spectators in the first four seasons rather than enemies because their purpose at this time really was just to observe.

To put it simply, the Observers were playing the long game in the previous seasons. They had to watch and record human civilization for many years before they were finally prepared to make their move.

Once they gathered the necessary information, they effectively ended their status as peaceful spectators and became enemies of the humans. Season 5 abandoned the status quo by bringing Olivia Anna Torv , Peter Joshua Jackson , and Walter forward into the future and making it the new setting of the series.
